Episode 34: Authority

Kyel and Matt are back in the saddle again after a week chock-full of sinus infections and social distancing.  They’re not both in the same saddle though.  They’re each in their own separate saddles.  The topic of conversation mostly centers around the authority of the Catholic Church, where it comes from, why we recognize it, and what it means in our lives.

Episode Notes:

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."  Matthew 28:19-20

"I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.”  John 17:20-21

“Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.  She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word.  But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me."  But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."  Luke 10: 38-42

"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." Matthew 16: 19

Episode 33: Sacraments Part 3 - Matrimony

Kyel and Matt dive into another episode on the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, this time tackling the Sacrament of Matrimony.  They touch briefly on the replete references to marriage in Scripture, only to explain that they won’t be diving into a conversation on marriage in Scripture on this episode.  Instead they focus mostly on how they are perpetually reminded of their own lowliness through the Sacrament.

Episode Notes

“People who are constantly concerned with themselves, who act above all for their own satisfaction, endanger their eternal salvation and cannot avoid being unhappy even in this life.  Only if a person forgets himself and gives himself to God and to others, in marriage as well as in any other aspect of life, can he be happy on this earth, with a happiness that is a preparation for, and a foretaste of, the joy of heaven.”  -Bl. “Fulfillness” – Not a real word. Somebody should let Matt know.

Episode 32: United Spouses Make Happy Houses

Kyel and Matt jump into a conversation about married couples consisting of one Catholic and one Non-Catholic.  Matt’s wife was Buddhist when they got married, Kyel’s wife was non-denominational Christian when they got married, and by the grace of God both of their wives are now Catholic.  They touch also on the continual conversion each of us are called to on a daily basis, the role of the domestic church, and the importance of allowing the Holy Spirit to be the one to convert others.

Episode 30: Faith Working Through Love

Kyel and Matt discuss justification through faith, which leads to God pouring the supernatural grace of Charity into our hearts, and how it is only through the grace of Charity that we are able to do good works.  So ultimately, our good works flow from justification, not the other way around.  Kyel also brings up the hot topic of COVID-19, and grills Matt on female involvement in the Catholic liturgy.

Episode 29: The Nitty-Gritty

Kyel and Matt jump into a topic of paramount importance. Matt solves all his wife's problems, Kyel could be accused of saying women are "simple souls" (if taken out of context), and neither Matt nor Kyel have faith the size of a mustard seed. “Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God, or the requesting of good things from God.” - St. John Damascene

“Late have I loved Thee, O Beauty so ancient and so new; late have I loved Thee!  For Behold, Thou were within me, and I outside, and I sought Thee outside and in my unloveliness fell upon those lovely things that Thou hast made.  Thou were with me and I was not with Thee.  I was kept from Thee by those things, yet had they not been in Thee, they would not have been at all.  Thou didst call and cry to me and break open my deafness, and Thou didst send forth Thy beams and shine upon me and chase away my blindness, Thou didst breathe fragrance upon me, and I drew in my breath and do not pant for Thee, and now hunger and thirst for Thee, Thou didst touch me, and I have burned for Thy peace.”  – St. Augustine, Confessions
